I can’t say I’m convinced that Mad Men and The Hobbit work in a similar fashion though, especially since the former’s fantasy aims – superficially at least – to critique something rather than affirm it.

And lumber jackets are part of hipster attire? I had no idea. But then, that’s hardly surprising :) And I actually have a few friends whose names begin with M – it’s just that this one is more concerned with anonymity than the rest…

But I can see your argument. And Mad Men’s a fantasy. We watch it for the same reasons that we read The Hobbit.
