Hello! I'm from Spain, and my english is not very good. But I'd like to say; I LOVE English accent. Love "Foundations" because of this.
I hate that norm you say, that every singer has to sing in an American accent. It would be fine if they were americans, but seriously, English accent has more charm.

Something similar happens with spanish singers. They start their career singing in normal spanish (from Spain) accent, and then they change, and they sing more like latino. It's awful! Because it's like they are dressing up like latino. Ok, honey; it's not the way you talk, so why are you singing like that? To get more fans? Well, so you are losing old fans too.

My conclusion is; everyone has to sing in his/her real accent. I would be much more authentic.

Kate Bush has always sung in an English accent, and it's one of many reasons I adore her music. BTW, I'm American, but I appreciate British accents -- and I hate the idea of the entire English-speaking world becoming one homogenized, quasi-American blur. We have something like 300 million Americans here, so no shortage; we don't need Brits to pretend to be Americans too. Better that they should sound like Brits.

Kate Nash doesn't even sing with her native accent. She puts on this fake cockney thing and pretends that's how she sounds. She's no different from these other singers who put on American accents except for the fact that she even speaks in her silly mockney accent. I'd rather have an English musician sing with an American accent and still speak normally rather than listen to someone faking their accent all the time.
Also singing in your normal accent as opposed to an American one is in no way a form of rebellion. If nobody did it sure it'd be rebellious. But many, many musicians do it. In fact the vast majority of non-American musicians sing normally. It's only the tiny fraction that are enormously popular who sing in an American accent. Which most likely makes them more marketable and thus a bit more intelligent then everyone who sings with their regional accent (especially if you're making music for money and not for the enjoyment of it).

Great article, which I stumbled upon as I was writing my own about English singers using fake American accents, one of my pet hates. In answer to your question, I don't think singing in an English accent is an act of rebellion, or English singers trying to sound 'street' English when they're obviously not. Those singers who are real and original get my vote every time :>)

This article is so ironic to me. I'm American, but one of the big things that draws me to Kate Nash is her accent. I love hearing English accents come accross in musicians voices.

Sorry for the delay. Yeah, I think that singing in one's native accent is a form of rebellion. But I also think it's important to note that it's English singers who are doing it - i.e. those with a long, respected, established tradition of their own. You don't hear Sri Lankan singers who sing in 'their own' accent cracking into iTunes top downloads in the States right?

What you said about the whole world tending to americanisation as it were is very true. The trend is so strong now that you see it everywhere. But that is probably because americans have dominated almost all fields today like IT,Electronics .almost all the scholarly articles published in these fields are written in american. Now this is all fine as long as people are given the freedom to be themselves and are not forced to change their identity just to find acceptance. That is where your discussion becomes relevant.Although many of us may have found American English odd during I early days we have found a way to get used to it and accept it .Can't they atleast reciprocate with a similar jesture?Refusal to conform is rebellion and I'm glad someone is taking a risk for this cause.
